Sustainable Community Development Project between Students at Krirk University and Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine

On 11 March 2026, Krirk University students had the opportunity to participate in the Sustainable Community Development Project – Lifestyle Medicine: Bringing Traditional Chinese Health-Promoting Exercises into Thai Communities, jointly organized by students from the Department of Medicine and Nursing Science, the International College, and the Center for Social Service and Academic Outreach at Krirk University, together with students from Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SDUTCM), China. The project was launched at Jirattikorn Community in Thailand with the goal of promoting healthier lifestyles through traditional Chinese health-preserving exercises while strengthening cultural and academic exchange between Thailand and China.

The training commenced with a complete demonstration of the 24-Form Tai Chi, showcasing graceful, coordinated movements that received enthusiastic applause from community participants. Residents were then guided through the fundamental principles of Tai Chi and Baduanjin in an interactive learning session. Participants actively engaged in every movement, experiencing first-hand the physical, mental, and cultural benefits of these traditional health practices in a welcoming and enjoyable atmosphere.

Beyond promoting healthy lifestyles, the programme also served as a platform for intercultural exchange. Following the training session, community members warmly invited faculty members, students, and instructors to share a traditional Thai breakfast. The informal gathering encouraged meaningful dialogue and friendship, allowing Chinese students to experience the hospitality of the local community while gaining a deeper understanding of Thai culture and society. The event reflected Krirk University’s commitment to fostering mutual understanding through people-to-people engagement and educational exchange.

The Sustainable Community Development Project officially commenced on 11 March 2026 and will continue as a regular community-based programme, with training sessions held every Wednesday and Friday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Jirattikorn Community. Through continuous instruction in Tai Chi and Baduanjin, the project seeks to empower community members to adopt healthier lifestyles, strengthen disease prevention, and improve long-term physical and mental well-being.

The initiative also reinforces Thailand–China collaboration in traditional medicine, public health, and higher education while supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

By integrating academic expertise, community engagement, and international collaboration, Krirk University students continue to demonstrate its commitment to creating positive societal impact beyond the classroom. The project represents a meaningful model of university-led sustainable development, illustrating how higher education institutions can translate knowledge into practical action that improves community well-being, strengthens cross-cultural understanding, and contributes to a healthier and more sustainable future.
